Alone

in the Humanity Play Project

In reaction to the Charleston, SC shooting the Humanity Play project was created by Carolyn Marie Wright in collaboration with Jane Bacon, Terrence Colby, Perry Daniel, Acquah Dansoh, Rukhmani Desai, Tiwana Floyd, Ace Gibson, Tamarra Graham, Yuko Lee, Rani O’Brien, Jevon Reynolds, Nicole Roberts, and Mirage Thrams.

I created "Alone" in reaction to the women, children, and black queer women that have been affected by police brutality and forgotten by the press.

Alone
creation/direction by Rani O’Brien

A brief herstory:
#BlackLivesMatter
Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza created #BlackLivesMatter as a call to action for Black people after 17-year-old Trayvon Marton was post-humously placed on trail for his own murder. It was a response to anti-Black racism. Subsequently, the movement has taken form in derivative ways that have not acknowledge its creators: queer Black women. Unsurprisingly and hetero-patriarchicly the originators of this work are often left unacknowledged and may be forgotten in the history books.

#SayHerName
On May 22, 2015, a group of women protesting the killings of Black women and children bared their breasts and peacefully shut down streets in downtown San Francisco. It was part of a nationwide day of action to protest the deaths of Aiyana Jones, Tanisha Anderson, Yvette Smith, Rekia Boyd, and other women killed by officers. #SayHerName was created in reaction to the media’s focus on the deaths of Black men and the - up to then - near complete absence of coverage of police brutality of Black women.

The piece:
Maya Angelou's poem Alone was read by Mirage Thrams as she was carried by all the women in the cast across the stage as if the women forgotten had aided the winds to sail her to safety.

Alone
By Maya Angelou

Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home

Where water is not thirsty

And bread loaf is not stone

I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong

That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use

Their wives run round like banshees

Their children sing the blues

They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.

But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely

I'll tell you what I know

Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow

The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,

Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.
